American, Born 1951
Kenn Erroll Backhaus was born in Beaver Dam, Wisconsin and
spent much of his childhood on the family farm near Burnett,
Wisconsin. His fondness for nature became the catalyst for
his art. He attended the Layton School of Art in Milwaukee,
Wisconsin graduating in 1973 and embarked on a career in
commercial design and illustration receiving awards at both
local and national levels. After a successful 11 year career
in commercial work, in 1984, Kenn decided to focus on his
true passion, the fine art of outdoor or Plein Air painting.
His subject matter includes not only landscape but also
figurative, portrait, still life and wildlife.
Kenn is a signature member
of the Oil Painters of America, the Plein Air Painters of
America and the National Academy of Professional Plein Air
Painters. He served as President of the Plein Air Painters
of America from 2000-2001. He is an active teacher of Plein
Air painting, holding numerous workshops across the country.
Kenn was one of fifty artists
selected from across the country to participate in a traveling
museum show entitled, "From Sea to Shining Sea-A Reflection
of America." The exhibit opened at the Haggin Museum
in Stockton, CA in the spring of 2004 and will be on view
at museums across the country through 2007.
